Deux comédiens se retrouvent sur la scène d’un vieux théâtre promis à la démolition. Chacun de son côté a réservé la salle pour une représentation exceptionnelle devant un parterre d’éventuels soutiens financiers. Contraints de cohabiter, ils décident de partager le plateau et de répéter, tant bien que mal, leurs spectacles respectifs.
Avec Waiting for Audience, l’auteur et metteur en scène Nelson Chia, de la compagnie singapourienne Nine Years Theatre (NYT), propose une réflexion aussi drôle qu’universelle sur le théâtre et sur la relation si particulière qui unit les comédiens à leur public. Sur scène, il forme avec Mia Chee un duo burlesque irrésistible, notamment dans les exercices d’échauffement et de diction en mandarin, ou lorsqu’ils interprètent quelques lignes de Shakespeare à la manière des Exercices de style de Raymond Queneau, en convoquant tour à tour diverses esthétiques du théâtre contemporain, occidental comme asiatique.
Loin de constituer un obstacle, le surtitrage en anglais et en français participe pleinement aux effets comiques du spectacle. Peu à peu, cependant, l’absurde et l’humour laissent la place à une poésie mélancolique, interrogeant sur le devenir de cet art fragile.
Un joli spectacle à découvrir.

Two actors find themselves on the stage of an old theatre doomed to demolition. Each of them has booked the venue for an exceptional performance before an audience of potential financial backers. Forced to share the space, they decide to divide the stage between them and rehearse their respective shows as best they can.
With Waiting for Audience, writer and director Nelson Chia, from Singapore’s Nine Years Theatre (NYT), offers a reflection on theatre that is both funny and universal, exploring the very special relationship between actors and their audience. On stage, he forms an irresistible comic duo with Mia Chee, particularly during the warm-up and diction exercises in Mandarin, or when they perform a few lines from Shakespeare in the manner of Raymond Queneau’s Exercises in Style, successively drawing on various aesthetics of contemporary theatre, both Western and Asian.
Far from being an obstacle, the surtitles in English and French fully contribute to the show’s comic effects. Gradually, however, absurdity and humour give way to a melancholy poetry, raising questions about the future of this fragile art form.
A lovely show well worth discovering.
